SUSTAIN-6G Project Introduction: Driving Sustainability in 6G

On Monday, 17 February 2025, Christoph Schmelz, Project Coordinator at Nokia, introduced the SUSTAIN-6G project during the SNS Webinar – Introducing the Call 3 projects (Part 2 of 2). This event showcased key projects under various streams, including sustainability, AI reliability, and microelectronics. SUSTAIN-6G, part of Stream B7 – Sustainability Lighthouse, aims to integrate sustainability into 6G technology development.

SUSTAIN-6G: Advancing Sustainability in Next-Gen Networks

SUSTAIN-6G, or SUSTainability-Advanced and Innovative Networking with 6G, is developing a comprehensive sustainability framework covering environmental, societal, and economic aspects. The project focuses on:

  • Identifying sustainability challenges and technological solutions.
  • Integrating insights from past research projects.
  • Developing innovative, sustainable 6G methodologies.
  • Validating solutions through proofs-of-concept.
  • Providing best practices and roadmaps for sustainable 6G integration.

Impact and Industry Integration

SUSTAIN-6G supports industry-wide standardization to ensure sustainability remains a core aspect of mobile network evolution. Its collaboration with stakeholders and SNS projects aims to influence European and global policies while aligning with EU values.

SNS JU and the Future of 6G

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) plays a crucial role in shaping Europe’s 6G leadership. The third round of SNS JU-funded projects, launched in January 2025, strengthens international collaboration and innovation in next-generation networks.
