Sustainability Baseline, Use Cases, and Baseline Requirements (D2.1)

The SUSTAIN-6G project is pleased to announce the release of Deliverable D2.1, Sustainability Baseline, Use Cases, and Baseline Requirements.

As the European lighthouse project on sustainability and 6G, SUSTAIN-6G aims to define a comprehensive framework that places sustainability at the heart of 6G design, development, and deployment.

About Deliverable D2.1

This deliverable establishes the baseline framework for embedding sustainability into 6G networks, covering both “Sustainable 6G” (reducing the footprint of 6G itself) and “6G for Sustainability” (leveraging 6G to enable greener solutions across sectors).

Key contributions include:

  • Definition of the environmental, societal, and economic pillars of sustainability in the 6G context.

  • Identification of design principles, trade-offs, and evaluation metrics to guide future work.

  • A state-of-the-art review of enabling technologies and eco-design strategies.

  • Sustainability-driven requirements derived from nine use cases, including applications in agriculture, smart grids, and telemedicine.

Why this matters

By establishing a clear baseline, D2.1 provides the reference point for all technical developments in SUSTAIN-6G. It ensures that the project’s innovations are aligned with Europe’s Green Deal ambitions and address real-world needs in diverse vertical sectors. This foundation will guide system-level integration and future validation of sustainable 6G solutions.
