Backed by Horizon Europe under the SNS JU’s Call 3, Stream B, SUSTAIN-6G is designated as the Sustainability Lighthouse project. Stream B focuses on wireless communication technologies, covering both evolutionary and revolutionary advancements for 6G and beyond.
SUSTAIN-6G (SUSTainability Advanced and Innovative Networking with 6G) addresses a critical challenge: how to embed sustainability holistically within the design, development, and deployment of 6G systems.
Our project seeks to answer fundamental questions:
- What does sustainability mean for 6G stakeholders and verticals?
- How can it be defined, assessed, and implemented in real networks?
- Which technical enablers will reduce the footprint while maximising positive impact?
- How can responsible innovation shape standards and regulations for long-term societal and economic benefits?
With a strong focus on:
- Integrating 6G with vertical use cases to enhance sustainability
- Developing a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) for E2E operations
- Delivering measurable impact and a strategic roadmap for standardisation and regulation
Core outcomes include the development of a Sustainability Management Plane (SMP) for end-to-end operations, impact evaluation of sustainability-driven technologies, and a strategic roadmap for standards and policy alignment.
This recognition in the SNS JU Journal 2025 reflects the commitment of SUSTAIN-6G to not only advance technical excellence in 6G, but also to help build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable digital infrastructure across Europe.
